Space for International Cooperation, is an independent, non-for profit, project-space in the heart of Athens. It is privately run by a group of international friends that each bring in their professional background and networks to host, support and facilitate co-operations among local and international partners. Artistic residencies, exhibitions, symposia, workshops or longer-term projects explore new ideas and new forms of knowledge and policies across the usual divide of cultures, disciplines and sectors.
The vision emphasizes embracing otherness and diversity as catalysts for positive change, advocating for collaboration across all kinds of demarcating lines, including geographical, political, cultural, and disciplinary.
[SIC] 's mission is to explore international collaboration creatively and humanely, emphasizing the quality of process over specific outcomes. It aims to facilitate accessible experiences with collaboration, research, and reflection, encouraging encounters based on ethics and equality.
At Space for International Cooperation [ SiC] in Athens, we cultivate a distinctive artistic approach to trauma, memory, and identity, one that embraces complexity while remaining open, accessible, and full of possibility. [SiC] is a small-scale institution and a flexible, creative space where artists, thinkers, and communities engage with profound themes through art—with curiosity, playfulness, and a spirit of transformation.
[SiC] fosters a light yet profound artistic methodology, where difficult or traumatic historic narratives are approached with openness and imagination. Through participatory and site-responsive methodologies, artists engage with memory in ways that are dynamic, engaging, and forward-looking.
Athens and its people—rich with layered histories—becomes both a backdrop and active participants in these explorations. [SiC] provides a setting where artists and audiences alike can challenge dominant narratives, rethink personal histories, and playfully explore new ways of understanding the past with an outlook on future possibilities.
A Distinctive Artistic Methodology
[SiC]’s thematic approach is shaped by artistic strategies that keep memory work open-ended, participatory, and engaging:
-
Participatory approaches and Collective processes – Communities are co-creators and engage with memory through artistic and (art based) research processes that are thought-provoking and empowering.
-
Performative and Embodied Histories – Memory lives in books and archives, in movement, sound, and gesture. The artist’s experiment – performance based, conceptual or visual – is a sensory experience that provides access to history in unexpected ways.
-
Site-Responsive Art – Athens’ urban and historical landscapes invited artistic interventions that question public spaces, activate forgotten stories, and playfully reshape our relationship with the past.
-
Material and Visual Storytelling – Artists work with found objects, archives, and everyday materials, turning them into poetic and unexpected carriers of memory.
-
Looking to the Future –[SiC]’s approach embraces speculative and forward-looking artistic practices, using history and creative practices to create future images
A Partnership with Art Futures
[SiC]’s vision aligns with Art Futures’ commitment to fostering artistic sustainability and critical practice. Small in scale, [SiC] offers a fresh and dynamic model where memory work is open, participatory, and artistically daring. A collaboration with Art Futures could focus on:
-
Residencies and micro-labs where artists develop experimental, participatory, and site-responsive works.
-
Collaborative exchanges connecting Athens with other artistic initiatives engaged in memory and identity.
-
A long-term dialogue, where Art Futures contributes to shaping and refining [SiC] ’s thematic approach.
[SiC] is a nimble, evolving space where art, history, and imagination meet in joyful and unexpected ways. A collaboration with Art Futures’ can help memory and creativity become an experience to engage with—accessible, playful, and profound.
[SiC] is an initiative of Frans Damman, Michael Defuster and Lars Ebert, led by Michael Defuster, programme by Giorgos Papadopoulos.
